Minerals & Precious
metals Testing
Benefiting from the extensive geological and mineralogical expertise of our gemologist, we possess the capability to conduct thorough testing on a diverse range of rocks, minerals, crystals and gem roughs. Our objective is to accurately identify these specimens which can be in their original forms, or as carvings and ornaments, ensuring precise classification and understanding.
- A mineral is a naturally formed inorganic substance, which possesses a definite chemical and atomic structure
- Rock is a naturally formed aggregate of minerals from the earth’s crust
- Crystal is a solid substance with orderly atomic structure, with gives rice to geometrically arranged external faces, internal and cleavage and directional effects
At the heart of our testing procedures are two key components:
- Thorough observation conducted under suitable lighting conditions and with the aid of magnification
- Utilisation of a range of specialized instruments to support and enhance our findings, ensuring accurate and reliable conclusions
Throughout history, the art of jewelry making has involved the use of a variety of elements and compositions in metals. Different periods of time have seen the prominence of various metals, with gold, platinum, and silver being among the most widely used and common metals in jewelry.
In NGI, we have the capabilities to perform chemical analysis on the metal by using Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometer (EDXRF) to identify the metal and confirm the percentage of the elements.
All the tests are non-destructive; however, the test is limited to the surface of the item. We cannot detect the thick plate and counterfeiting.
